Questions every homeowner should ask before appointing a business

For most of us our home is the single greatest investment we will make in our lives, outside our family of course! That is why many people can be hesitant about who they can trust to extend their home or renovate key areas such as their bathroom or laundry.

How do I know a company will do a good job? How can I decide what type of renovation will increase the value of my property? And what questions should I ask a tradesperson to make sure their work will last? These are some of the questions we regularly are asked and are happy to answer!

In this article we answer some of our most asked questions:

-
How do I decide what construction work will increase the value of my property?
-
What questions should I ask a tradesperson to make sure their work will last?
1. How do I know a company will do a good job?

This is a great question to ask when considering renovation work on your home and before you commit to a business. Chances are that you don’t know the workers directly, so it can be a hard decision to make without that information.

This is where previous reviews and recommendations can be a huge help. Check to see if there are references on their website for work they have done in the past and look for specific interactions the homeowners or businesses mention. Anyone can say “they were great” but often specific comments about how the company communicated during the process, how tidy they kept the worksite or how they handled problems that arose will give the best indication how your own experience will unfold.

If you still would like more information, why not ask the company in question if they have a previous client or builder who would be happy to talk about the information you would like? If you do decide to do this though, make sure you have a clear set of questions and keep your call brief, that way they will be happy to answer other people’s questions in the future! This is something Wollongong Construction Services are always happy to provide potential clients, so ask yourself why it may be that another business can’t provide you with this information.

2. How do I decide what construction work will increase the value of my property?

Usually we want an addition or renovation to improve the home we live in or make space for a growing family. But we also want it to add value to our investment rather than over capitalising.

That is where drawing on the experience of someone who works in the industry and has seen what works and what doesn’t - can be invaluable.

Two things we suggest you look out for here are experience and communication.

Look for a company who has been in the local area for a while and has a good feel for what has added value for previous clients. That way you can benefit from this experience in making decisions for your own property. Also ask how long they have been in the industry, someone who has 10 years’ experience will be able to offer more insight than someone who is just starting out.

Also, good communication is a key building block to good decisions. Make sure as a client you are able to convey your goals and are also listened to. You may not know how to achieve what you are after (that is why you employ a business who can help you with this!) but you should feel comfortable expressing exactly the outcome you want.

It is sad for us when we receive phone calls from distressed homeowners who have been ripped off from shonky operators asking us to fix the dodgy tradesperson mistakes. Often these scenarios can be avoided if you do your research!

3. What questions should I ask a tradesperson to make sure their work will last?

Ask about the products they use. Are they quality Australian brands? Do these brands provide a guarantee and if so, how long for? What guarantees on workmanship can you provide?

A quality renovation, tiling or general construction company won't mind you asking questions, in fact they should be happy to answer everything you throw at them! This shows they care about their work and take pride in the quality of service they provide.

Again also look for references to past work and check if homeowners or businesses were happy with the finished results.

In regards to using quality products this is something we are non-negotiable at WCS Renovations. We refuse to use second grade products, even if it means we lose a job. Let us explain why. You see if we use cheap products and this results in a poor outcome for you it can cost us our reputation as a quality tiling, renovation and handyman business. And the second reason is that we would be so disappointed in ourselves if our clients had to redo a project because they asked us to compromise the quality of our products to cut costs. So trust us, push for quality products only. Don’t compromise your home.

This is just the start
